Learning as Power: How SAfA Tanzania Is Empowering Nearly 600 Young Entrepreneurs

SAfA Tanzania has expanded and strengthened entrepreneurship training across northern Tanzania, reaching nearly 600 young people through an innovative approach known as Personal Initiative (PI) Training.
Unlike traditional entrepreneurship programmes that focus primarily on business management, marketing, and finance, PI Training helps participants develop the mindset and behaviors needed to succeed in business. The approach has been tested through randomized controlled trials and has been shown to be more effective than conventional business training methods.
Personal Initiative Training focuses on building key entrepreneurial skills that help individuals start, manage, and grow successful businesses. Participants learn how to:
• Think creatively and identify opportunities
• Take proactive action through goal setting and planning
• Build resilience when facing challenges
• Overcome barriers such as limited access to capital through practical strategies like bootstrapping
Rather than attempting to teach every aspect of business management, PI Training equips young entrepreneurs with the skills needed to continually learn, adapt, and improve.
SAfA Tanzania has further strengthened the PI approach by introducing peer support groups. These groups provide participants with opportunities to share experiences, solve challenges together, and encourage one another in applying Personal Initiative principles.
The peer-support model is expected to help sustain and amplify the impact of the training by creating networks of young entrepreneurs who learn from and support each other.
The success of PI Training demonstrates the power of learning as a tool for personal and economic empowerment.
Entrepreneurs operate in constantly changing environments and cannot rely solely on existing knowledge. Instead, they must continuously learn, reflect, adapt, and improve. PI Training reinforces this mindset by encouraging participants to become lifelong learners who actively seek solutions and opportunities.
At the same time, the introduction of peer-support groups highlights the importance of learning within a community. Access to feedback, encouragement, and shared experiences can significantly strengthen an individual’s ability to grow and succeed.
By embracing the principles of Personal Initiative and continuous learning, nearly 600 young participants across northern Tanzania are now better equipped to pursue their business ambitions and achieve their personal goals.
Through innovative training and community-based support, SAfA Tanzania continues to demonstrate that learning is not only knowledge, it is power.
