Empowering youth through vegetable production

Inuka Uangaze, the name of the youth farmer field school that translates to ‘Rise and Shine’ in English, is based in the Hai District of the Kilimanjaro region. Empowered by HRNS Tanzania, the group consists of 17 youths who have united to cultivate cucumbers on their half-acre plot.

As they gather three times a week in the field to work together on cucumbers, this year, the youth group has a vision to:

  • Purchase tents and chairs to rent to community members for events as an additional source of income for the group.
  • Acquire equipment to start providing catering services to their community.
  • Continue focusing on agriculture even after achieving the above goals.

The group received training in organizational development, vegetable production, and conservation agriculture for maize and beans from HRNS Tanzania.

Emmanuel Bujiku, the trainer of trainees from HRNS, has been supporting the group for around a year now and noted, “We’re glad that the group members are very active in participating in various activities and are making good progress.

Several group members have been inspired to start their own fields in addition to working on the Youth Farmer Field School (YFFS) demonstration plot”

This is one of the many youth groups receiving support from HRNS Tanzania through SAfA Tanzania project. @SAfATanzania is a youth-focused project with the aim of empowering over 50,000 Tanzanian youth aged 15-30 in the regions of Arusha, Kilimanjaro, Mbeya and Songwe, by enhancing their livelihood prospects.
